What is a citation in AI search?

A citation in AI search is a source an AI model links to in its answer. A retrieved source is a page the model read to write the answer, but did not link to.

When ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews answers a question, it reads pages from around the web first: review sites, forum threads, buying guides, sometimes your own site. It links to some of those pages in the answer. Those links are citations. We show you both lists for your category, so you know which pages the models read and which ones they link to.

How is citation coverage calculated?

Citation coverage is the share of citations that point to your own domains. We count it across the answers to your prompts, for the dates, model and market you choose. Only cited sources count, not retrieved ones.

ExampleAcross 1,000 answers to your prompts, the models make 2,500 citations. If 200 of them point to your own domains, your citation coverage is 8%. The other 92% go to review sites, forums, publishers and competitors. The ranked list shows you which.

How we measure AI citations →

Why do AI citations matter?

Models tend to cite the pages they use. The cited list shows you what the answers are built from.

When an AI model searches the web, it writes its answer from the pages it finds. So the list of sources in your category shows you which pages shape the answers today. That list is not fixed. We check it every day, so you see when a new source starts to be cited.

That makes it a list you can act on. If review sites hold most of the citations for your buying prompts, get your products reviewed there next. If your own guides are cited on two models and missing on the rest, you know where the gap is. And if a page of yours is retrieved but never cited, the model reads it and then links to someone else. That is the page to improve first.

Step 01 · Define

Start from your prompts.

Start from the questions your customers ask in your category: research, comparison and buying prompts, for each of your markets. You approve the list, so every citation comes from a question you recognise.

Step 02 · Extract

We save every source from every answer.

We ask each prompt on every model on your plan, every day. You can track ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini. We save every source from each answer and mark it Cited or Retrieved. You see every source, not only your own: review sites, forums, publishers, competitors' pages and yours.

Step 03 · Check

See which sources mention you and your competitors.

We check each cited page for your brand and the competitors you track, and list the brands it names. Filter to the pages that name a competitor but not you. AI models already use those pages, and your brand is missing from them.

Step 04 · Compare

See your citation coverage on every model.

See how often each model links to your own site, next to your nearest competitor. Then break it down by topic or tag, and open any citation to read the answer behind it.

Cited versus retrieved sources

An AI model reads more pages than it links to. In the answer in step 02, ChatGPT used 13 pages and linked to 4. The 4 it links to are cited sources. The other 9 are retrieved sources: the model read them, but the answer does not link to them.

The difference tells you what to do next. If your page is cited, readers can click through to it from the answer. If it is retrieved but not cited, the model found it and read it, then linked to someone else. If it is neither, the model is not finding it at all.

Where your AI citations come from

Citations often come from places marketers do not expect. Over the 30 days in the example above, nike.com had 3.7% of the citations in its category. RunRepeat, a shoe review site, had 10.4%, and YouTube had 5.4%. Your pages compete with review sites, publishers, forums and retailers for a link in the answer.

We break this down for your category. You see which domains are cited, how often, on which models, and which of your own pages appear. You also see how citations split between your sites and everyone else’s. That tells you whether to get featured by the publishers the models already cite, improve the pages of yours they pass over, or both.

Built for PR, content and SEO teams.

The sources list gives three teams something to work from. PR teams see which publishers AI models already cite, and where to get featured. Content teams see which of their pages are cited and which are only retrieved. SEO teams report citation coverage by model, month by month.

What is a citation in AI search?

A citation in AI search is a source an AI model links to in its answer. Models cite review sites, forums, publishers and brand pages, and those links show which pages an answer is built from. Citation coverage is the share of those citations that point to your own domains. For example, if the models make 2,500 citations across 1,000 answers and 200 of them point to your own domains, your coverage is 8%.

What is the difference between a cited source and a retrieved source?

A cited source is a page the model links to in its answer. A retrieved source is a page the model read while writing the answer, but did not link to. We mark every source as Cited or Retrieved, so you can see which of your pages are read and which get the link.

Which AI models do you track citations from?

Up to seven, depending on your plan: ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini. Every model gets the same prompts on the same day, and we save the sources from every answer. That keeps the numbers comparable from one model to the next.

Can I see which sources my competitors get cited in?

Yes. We save every source from every answer, not only your own. You see the full ranked list for your category: competitors' pages, review sites, forums, and how each domain's share changes over time.

How far back does the citation history go?

From the day your tracking starts. We save every answer and every source from your first scan onwards. Your history builds daily, and every number links to the answer behind it.
