The short answer
To track your visibility in ChatGPT, ask it the same buyer prompts every day. Record whether each answer names you, links to you, or names a competitor instead. Then read the rate over weeks, not the answer on one day.
AIS Insights does this on every model on your plan, and links every number to the answer behind it.
Nike is a demo project we run in a live AIS Insights account, so every number here is real but none of it is client data. Here's what we found asking ChatGPT its 50 prompts every day for three weeks:
- Nike was named in 93% of answers. On its weakest prompt, it was named on 3 days out of 21.
- The answers kept changing. On 41% of days, the brands in an answer were different from the day before.
- ChatGPT read more than it linked. It pulled in about 15 pages per answer and cited about a third of them.
- One review site set the shortlist. RunRepeat was cited in 45% of answers. Reddit supplied 2% of citations.
What a ChatGPT answer is made of
You can't track something you can't name.
So before the steps, here's one real answer, taken apart. ChatGPT gave it on 30 September 2026 to the prompt best performance running shoes for flat feet in the uk
, asked as a signed-out visitor in the UK.

- The search. Before it wrote a word, ChatGPT searched the web once:
best stability running shoes flat feet UK Brooks Adrenaline GTS Asics GT-2000 Hoka Arahi
. It had a shortlist before it read a single page. Nike wasn't on it. - The names. The answer named ASICS, Nike, On, Topo Athletic, Brooks, HOKA and New Balance. Nike got in through one product, the Nike Structure 26.
- The product cards. Four products appeared as cards with a price and a rating, before the comparison table. The Nike Structure 26, at £94.49, was the first card.
- The citations. Five pages were linked in the answer: two RunRepeat guides, two Podiatrist Tested guides and one from Running Bath. The line recommending the Nike shoe cited RunRepeat.
- Pages pulled in but not cited. Seven more pages were listed as sources and never linked in the text, including Pace & Pavement, NextGait and Prevention.
- The link tag. Every link carries
utm_source=chatgpt.com. That tag is the only part of this answer your analytics will ever see.
On the other 18 days in our three-week sample, the same prompt left Nike out completely.
A mention is a name in the answer. A citation is a link. They move separately, so track both.
Why your analytics can't see this
Open GA4 and you'll probably find a trickle of visits from chatgpt.com.
That number is the floor, not the total.
When ChatGPT names your brand, one of three things happens. The buyer clicks a citation, and you get a visit tagged chatgpt.com. The buyer searches your name later, and the visit shows up as organic or direct. Or the buyer reads the answer and buys from whoever was on the shortlist. Nothing reaches your site at all.
In the flat feet answer above, ChatGPT put four products in front of the buyer with prices before a single link. Most of what a buyer needed to choose was inside the answer.
Referral traffic counts the people who clicked. Visibility shows whether you were in the answer at all, clicked or not.
Track the clicks you do get anyway. They're the only part that connects to revenue:
- In GA4: go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Set the dimension to Session source and filter for chatgpt.com.
- On your forms: add a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field. It catches the buyers who read your name in ChatGPT and came back another way.
How much ChatGPT changes its mind
Here's the problem with checking ChatGPT once.
We asked ChatGPT the same 50 prompts every day for 21 days, from 18 September to 8 October 2026. That gave us 1,000 pairs of answers to the same prompt on consecutive days.
On 41% of those days, the brands in the answer were different from the day before.
For Nike, most prompts were rock solid. On 37 of the 50 prompts, ChatGPT named Nike in every answer, every day. The trouble sat in the other 13.
Here's what a single check would have told you on the shakiest ones:
| Prompt | Days Nike was named, of 21 | Chance one check showed Nike |
|---|---|---|
best performance running shoes for flat feet in the uk | 3 | 14% |
where can i buy premium running trainers in london? | 17 | 81% |
best running trainers under £120 in the uk | 18 | 86% |
recommend top-rated running trainer brands for beginners in the uk | 18 | 86% |
i'm switching from trainers to proper boots, which top brands should i look at? | 0 | 0% |
The London prompt flipped between naming Nike and leaving it out eight times in three weeks. Check it on a Monday and you'd think Nike owned it. Check it on the Tuesday and you'd think Nike had a problem.
Some guides say daily tracking is noise and you should check weekly. We'd put it differently. One day is noise. Thirty days in a row is a rate. A weekly check gives you four readings a month on prompts that change their mind several times a week.
One check tells you what ChatGPT said once. A daily series tells you what it usually says.
How to track your visibility in ChatGPT with AIS Insights
Here's the process we run, using our Nike demo project as the example. In seven steps.
Step 1: Build a prompt set
A prompt set is the list of questions you ask ChatGPT every day. This is very important to get right because it is the foundation of your data.
Start with the topics you want to own. For Nike, that might be football boots, running shoes and women's tracksuits.
Write prompts the way a buyer types, not the way a marketer thinks. Make sure you capture these four types:
- Seed prompt: a broad category question, like
what are the best running shoes
- Modifier:
i'm training for my first marathon, which running shoes should i look at?
- Comparison:
which brand has the best grip for football boots on wet grass in the uk?
- Brand:
is nike still a good brand to buy trainers from?
Don't write prompts based on the content already on your website. That builds in bias.
Nike's 50 prompts sit in five topics of 10 each: running, football boots, basketball, lifestyle trainers, and training and gym. Topics tell you which parts of the category you're winning, so you know where to brief new content.
In AIS Insights, we can generate your prompts for you. We read your website to learn what you offer, then draft prompts from the questions buyers ask AI in your category, already grouped into topics. Every prompt we draft is also tagged two ways for you:
- Brand or non-brand. A brand prompt has your brand name in it, like
is nike still a good brand to buy trainers from?
. A non-brand prompt doesn’t. Nike’s set is 5 brand and 45 non-brand. - Buying stage. Awareness, consideration or purchase, so you can see where in the buying journey you drop out of the answer. Nike's set is 35 awareness, 10 consideration and 5 purchase.
You review it, edit it, or upload your own as a CSV. Start with around 50. You want a core set of prompts you want to be visible for.
Seed prompt
what are the best running shoes
what are the top football boots
recommend me some of the top basketball shoes
Modifier
i'm training for my first marathon, which running shoes should i look at?
best performance running shoes for flat feet in the uk
i'm switching from trainers to proper boots, which top brands should i look at?
Comparison
which brand has the best grip for football boots on wet grass in the uk?
which brand has the best cushioning for basketball shoes in the uk?
Brand
is nike still a good brand to buy trainers from?
nike vs adidas for basketball shoes, which is better for outdoor play?
are nike pegasus running shoes worth the money?
what is nike best known for today?
Step 2: Track your competitors
Add your competitors. Every AIS Insights plan includes unlimited competitors. The Nike demo project tracks Adidas, New Balance, Puma, Under Armour and Gymshark.
On the flat feet prompt, none of them was the problem. ChatGPT named ASICS on all 21 days, Brooks and Hoka on 19, Saucony on 18 and New Balance on 15. Four of the five brands that beat Nike weren't on its list.
That's normal. The brands you compete with in a store aren't always the brands ChatGPT puts next to you.
AIS Insights shows you the brands appearing in your answers that you're not tracking yet, so you can add them in one click.
Step 3: Read your ChatGPT baseline
Your visibility is the share of answers that name you. Filter the dashboard to ChatGPT and you have your baseline.
Then filter to non-brand prompts. That's the baseline that counts. Brand prompts have your name in them, so ChatGPT almost always names you back. On Nike's 5 brand prompts, it named Nike in 105 of 106 answers.
Nike's non-brand baseline, over the three weeks:
| Brand | Share of ChatGPT answers naming it |
|---|---|
| Nike | 93% |
| Adidas | 90% |
| New Balance | 59% |
| Puma | 57% |
| Under Armour | 27% |
Nike holds at 93% either way. Its rivals don't. Count every prompt and Adidas sits 9 points behind Nike. Count only non-brand prompts and the gap is 3.
Read the sentiment next to it. Of Nike's mentions on non-brand prompts that had been scored, 88% were positive, 6% mixed and 6% neutral. One was negative. Being named is half the job. Being named well is the other half.
Step 4: Find the prompts where ChatGPT names someone else
AIS Insights marks every topic and every prompt against the competitors you track:
- Winning. You're named more often than any of them.
- Tied. You share the lead with a competitor.
- Losing. You're named, but a competitor is named more often.
- Invisible. You're not named at all.
On ChatGPT, all five of Nike's topics were winning. Its prompts tell a different story: 14 winning, 29 tied, 6 losing and 1 invisible.
Start with the invisible and losing prompts. They're your backlog. For Nike, proper boots is invisible, and flat feet and smart casual are losing by the widest margin.
Open a prompt and read the answers, day by day. Look at who got named instead of you, and why.
Your average tells you how you're doing. Your worst prompts tell you what to do.

Step 5: See what ChatGPT cited, and what it read and skipped
ChatGPT pulls in more pages than it links. In Nike's answers, it pulled in about 15 pages per answer and cited about a third of them. The rest were read and dropped.
Nike's own site shows why this matters. ChatGPT pulled in nike.com pages 1,222 times in three weeks and cited them 407 times. That's about 1 in 3. The other two times, ChatGPT had Nike's page in hand and chose someone else's.
AIS Insights lists both kinds of page for every answer. Cited pages are marked in mint, pages it read but didn't cite in grey, and your own pages carry an Owned badge.

For Nike's prompts, ChatGPT searched the web before 96% of its answers, usually once.
Read those searches. They're the closest thing you'll get to ChatGPT's brief to itself.
On flat feet, the search on 1 October was best stability running shoes flat feet UK 2026 ASICS Gel Kayano Brooks Adrenaline Saucony Guide Hoka Arahi
. ChatGPT had already decided which shoes to look up. The pages that answer that search are the ones in the running.
AIS Insights records every search, round by round, under Query fan-out.

Step 7: Make one change, and track it as a campaign
Tracking is worth nothing if it doesn't change what you do next week.
Pick one prompt from Step 4. Make one change aimed at it: a page, a review, a correction. Add the URLs to a campaign in AIS Insights and watch the citations from the day it goes live.
Then give it time. Nobody can tell you how long ChatGPT takes to notice a change, us included. Track every change for at least 30 days before you judge it.

What ChatGPT actually cites
Here's where Nike's ChatGPT answers came from, over the same three weeks:
| Site | Share of all citations | Answers citing it |
|---|---|---|
| runrepeat.com | 18.3% | 45% |
| nike.com | 8.5% | 24% |
| vogue.co.uk | 3.2% | 9% |
| runnersworld.com | 2.9% | 8% |
| whowhatwear.com | 2.9% | 11% |
| adidas.co.uk | 2.5% | 8% |
| reddit.com | 1.9% | 3% |
Three things stand out.
One review site does the heavy lifting. RunRepeat was cited in 45% of all answers and supplied more than twice as many citations as Nike's own site. If you sell running shoes in the UK, RunRepeat's guides are part of your marketing whether you like it or not.
Your own site is in the mix, but not in charge. nike.com was the second most cited site, at 8.5%. That's 1 citation in 12, for the most famous brand in the category.
Reddit isn't the source everyone says it is. You'll read that Reddit is ChatGPT's favourite source. In Nike's answers it was, until August. In July, Reddit supplied about 20% of ChatGPT's citations. Since mid-September it has supplied about 2%.
This is one category in one market. Yours will look different. That's the point of tracking it.
ChatGPT builds its shortlist on other people's sites. Find the sites that build yours.
What to do with what you find
Every result points to a different fix. Here's the map:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You're never mentioned at all | ChatGPT may not be able to reach or read your site | Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check nothing blocks OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI's search crawler. Then check your pages' text is in the HTML, not loaded by JavaScript: OpenAI's crawlers generally don't run it. View the page source and search for a sentence from the page |
| You're rarely named and your pages are never pulled in | No page of yours answers the question | Write the page that answers that exact prompt |
| Your pages are pulled in but not cited | ChatGPT found you and picked someone else | Put the answer in your first lines. Add the specifics it's quoting from rivals: prices, specs, comparisons |
| One third-party site is cited in most answers | That site is setting the shortlist | Get reviewed, listed or corrected there. This is PR work, not SEO |
| ChatGPT's searches name rivals' products | The shortlist is formed before it reads | Get into the roundups and reviews that rank for those searches |
| You're named but described badly | A source is out of date or negative | Find the cited page behind the description and fix it at source |
| Your visibility drops on one day across every prompt | ChatGPT changed, not you | Check whether ChatGPT changed its default model that day before you change anything |
For Nike's flat feet prompt, that map points at the fourth and fifth rows. The fix isn't a new page on nike.com. It's getting the Nike Structure into the stability-shoe roundups that RunRepeat and Podiatrist Tested publish.
What no ChatGPT tracker can tell you, including ours
Every tracker samples ChatGPT from the outside. Here's what that means in practice:
- It sees the signed-out answer. We ask the way a new visitor in your market would. A logged-in buyer with months of chat history can get a different answer, and no tracker can see that.
- It sees one market at a time. Nike's numbers are for the UK. Ask from the US and the shortlist changes.
- ChatGPT changes underneath you. OpenAI changes the model behind ChatGPT, and the answers change with it. On 8 October 2026, GPT-6 became the default for free and signed-out users. Any tracker that doesn't record when that happens will show you a trend that isn't yours.
- It asks a sample, not every conversation. Fifty prompts a day is a strong signal. It's not a census.
Trust the tracker that shows you its answers. In AIS Insights, every number opens to the stored answer behind it, so you can check our work.
Questions to ask any ChatGPT tracker
Whichever tool you pick, ask these before you pay. Here are our answers.
| Question | AIS Insights |
|---|---|
| Can I read the actual answer behind every number? | Yes. Every score opens to the stored answer, in one click |
| Does it show pages ChatGPT read but didn't cite? | Yes. Cited and read-but-not-cited pages are listed for every answer |
| Does it record what ChatGPT searched for? | Yes, every search it ran, round by round |
| How often does it ask? | Every day, overnight |
| Does it ask signed out or logged in? | Signed out, in your market, so the answer matches what a new buyer sees |
| Will it show me competitors I'm not tracking? | Yes. It suggests brands that appear in your answers |
| Can I prove a change worked? | Yes. Group the pages you change into a campaign and track citations from launch |
| Which models does it cover? | Up to seven, depending on your plan |
Track ChatGPT alongside the other models
ChatGPT is one model your buyers use. AIS Insights asks the same prompts, on the same day, across every model on your plan, so a gap between two models is a real difference in how they answer.
You can track up to seven models, depending on your plan: ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini. ChatGPT is available on every plan. Starter, Growth and Scale each track three models of your choice, and Enterprise tracks all seven, including Claude.
Tracking your visibility in ChatGPT, answered.
How do I track my brand's visibility in ChatGPT?
Ask ChatGPT the same buyer prompts every day and record whether each answer names you, cites you or names a competitor instead. Read the rate over weeks, not one answer. AIS Insights runs your prompt set daily and links every number to the answer behind it.
Can Google Analytics show my ChatGPT traffic?
Partly. GA4 shows visits from people who clicked a link tagged chatgpt.com. It misses people who read your name and searched for you later, and people who bought from the answer without clicking at all. Treat it as the floor.
Is there a free ChatGPT visibility checker?
Yes. Enter your website on this page and we'll ask ChatGPT a question your buyers ask, then show you which brands it recommends and why.
How many prompts should I track?
Start with around 50, mixed across seed, modifier, comparison and brand prompts. Keep the set stable so this month compares with last month.
Does ChatGPT give the same answer every time?
No. Across 1,000 pairs of answers to the same prompt on consecutive days, the brands named changed 41% of the time. That's why a single check is a snapshot and a daily series is a trend.
Should I test prompts in my own ChatGPT account?
No. Your account remembers your chats, which can flatter your brand. Use a temporary chat, signed out if possible, from the same country each time.
What's the difference between being mentioned and being cited?
A mention is your name in the answer. A citation is a link to a page. ChatGPT can name you without linking you, and link your page while recommending someone else. Track both.
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand?
Usually one of three reasons. No page answers that exact question. Your page is found but passed over for one with clearer specifics. Or the sites ChatGPT trusts in your category don't mention you. Your citations show which one it is.
How long does it take to improve ChatGPT visibility?
Nobody can give you a fixed timeline, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Make one change, track it as a campaign, and give it at least 30 days before you judge it.
Does AIS Insights let ChatGPT search the web?
Yes, when ChatGPT chooses to. We ask the way a signed-out visitor in your market would and don't switch search on or off, so the answer and its sources match what a buyer sees.
Which plans include ChatGPT?
Every plan. Starter, Growth and Scale track three models of your choice, and Enterprise tracks all seven.
About this data: Nike is a demo project we track to show how AIS Insights works. It runs in a live AIS Insights account, like any customer's, but Nike is not an AIS Insights customer, this is not client data, and Nike hasn't endorsed this page. The numbers come from 50 prompts asked to ChatGPT once a day as a signed-out visitor in the UK, from 18 September to 8 October 2026 (1,053 answers), including the answer of 30 September 2026 shown above. A brand counts as named when it appears in the answer itself, including in a product name.
